What is the completion of chemicals? Why do we need it?

What is the completion of chemicals? Why do we need it?
January 7, 2021

Completion chemicals are the liquids used by many oil and gas companies after extracting oil or gas from the well. That is also known as the brine, which is a low solid mud. Our chemical plants in texas work on completion chemicals that increase production by minimizing damage in the reservoir.

These completion chemicals are the same solid-free fluids used in the drilling process and mostly for the same purpose. The workover of a well, though it is oil, gas, or an injection well, will improve its physical characteristics. It also enhances production abilities that may include cleanout of wax, acid stimulation, scale treatment, fracture stimulation, water shut-off, gravel packing, completion, and reperforations.

Mainly the chemical completion fluids are used to work on the well, so it is complete for production. These chemicals are essential to rework the producing formation before the show. These chemicals or fluids also help protect the production formation from damage if the downhole equipment fails. Formation damage may decrease a well’s productivity, which affects your ROI.

Cementing additives can be considered workover and completion chemicals because this is the process of the well’s complete process. During this procedure, a pipe is placed down the hole and cements the pump around the outside of the tube. This prevent the transfer of fluids or gases within wellbore zones.

The cement is also a crucial part of protecting the casing from collapsing, the effects of drilling, and corrosion, allowing field personnel to control the well better. Because of the well and other geologic factors’ depth, chemicals have to be added to the setting times and make porosity adjustments given other cement characteristics may not be compatible with the surrounding geology.

Why we need Completion Chemicals?

1 Completion and Workover Operations

Completion chemicals or fluids are used during the drilling the steps of completion, or completion, of the well. A completion operation includes both:

  • perforating the casing,
  • setting the tubing and pump, and
  • cementing the casing.

Workover fluids are used at the time of remedial work in the well, like removing tubing, replacing a pump, logging, reperforating, and cleaning out sand or other deposits.

Both workover and completion fluids are used to control the well pressure and stop the well from blowing out while being completed or worked over. Furthermore, to prevent the collapse of the casing from overpressure.

Especially formulated fluids are used in connection with completion and workover operations to minimize the damage in the formation

2 Formation damage from filtrate and solids invasion may minimize by treating the well in a near-balanced condition; that is, the wellbore pressure is close to the formation pressure. In high-pressure wells, it is necessary to treat the well under over-balanced or under-balanced conditions most of the time. If over-balanced, the treating fluids design temporarily seals the perforations to prevent liquids’ and solids entry into the formation. If under-balanced, the treating fluids design avoids solids’ exit from building into the wellbore. That chemical completion allows for:

  • Effectively manage the circulating pressures during coil tubing drill outs extending the life of the coil spring.
  • Successfully build viscosity of various waters used in the oil and gas industry.
  • Provide superior carrying capacity ensuring a cleaner wellbore.
  • Minimize the spend on chemicals.

Our completion fluids are manufactured with care to offer a smooth transition between the completion and reservoir drilling phases. J&J Tamez products include quality brine fluids, surfactants, filtration control agents, and scavengers. Each one is designed to fit the completion requirements.

Here at J&J Tamez, we recognize that every well has its own set of downhole characteristics. Furthermore, that understanding is the key to successful completion systems. Well cementing to a high standard is vital to ensuring that high-quality production processes attain. To look further at our different services, contact us at 361-886-5400.
